Nearly 100 fifth graders from Barack Obama Elementary School learned first hand about gardening after constructing raised vegetable gardening beds as part of the Eating from the Garden Program on Thursday, September 1.
The Eating from the Garden program is sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension. The program teaches students about gardening and nutrition. It also encourages them to choose fruits and vegetables as a healthier food choice while they develop green thumbs.
Volunteers from the Normandy School District, Barack Obama Elementary School, Beyond Housing, Express Scripts, Gateway Greening, Lincoln University Extension, The Sierra Club and Wayside Community Garden assisted students with the project.
Eating from the Garden was first launched as a pilot program in Kansas City. A 2011 Youth Garden Grant from Gateway Greening enabled Obama School to be among several St. Louis area schools to participate in the initiative. Gateway Greening also provided lumber, soil, tools and other supplies for the gardening project.
